The
Barron Prize carefully pairs each of its winners with a supportive mentor – an adult who is passionate about and working in the winner's area of interest. These mentors field questions from the winners, connect them with other people and resources that might further their work, and inspire them by their own example.
A few examples of these ongoing mentoring relationships:
• Ellie, 2004 winner and founder of www.RepeatAfterUs.com, which helps people learn English as a second language, paired with Eva Lerner Lam, President of the
Beijing Alumni Association of Princeton University, who works to help students accepted to Princeton improve their English speaking skills.
• Phebe, 2006 winner who raised over $100,000 to protect songbird habitat in Costa Rica , paired with Viviana Ruiz-Gutierrez, a Ph. D. candidate at Cornell Lab of Ornithology, whose research includes work in Costa Rica to assess the impact of agricultural land use on bird populations.
• Matthew, 2003 winner who raised $350,000 to build a fully accessible playground for kids with and without disabilities, paired with B'fer Roth, who designs and builds fully accessible tree houses for Paul Newman's Hole in the Wall Gang camps.
• Kayla, 2006 winner who co-founded the Annual Salmon Run Relay to increase awareness of the importance of salmon to Native American tribes in Northern California, paired with Jaime Pinkham, who has worked on tribal salmon restoration in the Columbia Basin for the Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission.
• Ana, 2005 winner and founder of Peruvian Hearts, which provides food, clothing, and education to girls in a Peruvian orphanage, paired with Kate Bloom, Latin American Program Director for Global Routes, which designs foreign exchange community service programs for students.
• Zander, 2006 winner who educates other students about the importance of saving endangered sea turtles, paired with Carl Safina, President of Blue Ocean Institute and a leading expert on sea turtle conservation.
